Canvassing in Chester

So up until this week, much of the house energy was about the Election.  I spent a number of days in out of town getting out the vote.  My friend Josephine Bergin and I knocked on 603 doors.  We spent our time with the people of Chester, PA.  We had the great fortune to see some of these people more than once.  The people of Chester City are not affluent, and seem to have very little visible means of support.  As door after door opened, we found ourselves in living rooms no different from any other, their stories heartwarming, engaging and full of hope.  Our final visit, Election Day, we were privileged to: talk with the 18 year old girl on her way, balloons in hand, to her first election; help a young man find out where to go and vote; talk with the proud woman who was the first African-American woman elected to the City Countil in Chester.  We thank the people of Chester for opening their doors to us and for letting us share this historic day.
